Self-directed learning and discovery

The competency-based medical curriculum of the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery requires deep motivation and an earnest desire to demonstrate and practice self-directed learning and discovery.

Hinged on educational underpinnings espousing constructive, collaborative and experiential learning, Thomasian medical learners are expected to excel and apply skills in critical inquiry and decision-making.

Character development through Christian oriented action

The three attributes of the Thomasian physician is best seen through programs, projects and activities that reflect the University’s strong Christian leanings. Thomasian medical learners are exposed to the human side of medical practice through topics and subjects in bioethics, clinico-moral conferences and integrated ethical considerations in clinical case discussions.

Yearly recollection activities and special masses also deepen their devotion to God and strengthen their commitment to practice competence and compassion in their every living encounters.

Talent enrichment and enhancement

Organizations of different interests, advocacies and inclinations abound in the UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. Established to promote camaraderie and comradeship through responsible and relevant activities, Thomasian medical learners are provided with opportunities to hone their artistic talents and skills as well as their organizational and creative potentials.

The annual “Medicine Week” celebration is a festive showcase of the Thomasian medical learners multi-layered and multi-faceted personalities. Songs, skits, dances, posters, essays, photographs, short films and spectacular production numbers make this event a truly memorable and engaging experience.

Community extension services

Various community extension projects through medical missions, educational lectures and training are conducted by Thomasian medical learners. Through these activities, they are exposed to the real health scenario of majority of our countrymen and are moved to share their ideas, experiences and recommendations on ways to help address and hopefully solve pressing problems in the community. Instilling in them a sense of social responsiveness, genuine volunteerism and earnest altruism, they unearth learning through close immersion and active interaction with people from various socio-economic spectra. As a truly Christian-oriented institution of medical learning, the Thomasian medical learner is imbued with a pro-God, pro-country, pro-family and pro-poor values.

Research

The UST Faculty of Medicine is a fertile training ground for research. It has facilities that provide a research-friendly environment for Thomasian discoveries in both basic and clinical sciences. It has within its premises the “Research Center for the Health Sciences” established to spearhead and innovate research outputs from Thomasian medical learners. Likewise, it has reinvented the “Skills and Simulation Center for the Health Sciences” housing areas where research in medicine, surgery, ultrasound technology and life support science can be performed. The Department of Clinical Epidemiology has been created to guide Thomasian medical learners in the creation of methodologically sound research.

As a modern medical learner, the Thomasian medical graduate is expected to produce or be part of locally and globally impactful research in medicine and the health sciences.
